Hydrogen Land Saxony
Energy Saxony drives the development and marketing of
future cutting-edge technologies in the fields of energy conversion, storage
and efficiency and, together with its members, initiates projects to
Ensuring a clean energy supply and mobility. The energy carrier hydrogen plays a key role here, as it enables the medium and long-term storage of electrical energy and thus a
cross-sectoral use of volatile renewable energies. “Green hydrogen” is produced when solar, wind or biogas electricity is used for the
electrolysis process is used, in which water is converted into hydrogen and
oxygen is broken down. Among other things, this hydrogen can be used as a fuel for
fuel cell vehicles, which can be used to power pollutant-free
especially for vehicle fleets with high mileages in local and long-distance transportation.
Long-distance transport Advantages such as short refueling times and undiminished ranges
offers. Green hydrogen can be produced via the existing gas infrastructure as
admixture or in methanized form as “synthetic natural gas”, and
used to link the electricity sector with the heating and transport sectors
become. Green hydrogen as an energy carrier thus paves the way for the
energy transition andCO2-neutral mobility. In Saxony
The “Hydrogen Land Saxony” innovation cluster, which is managed by Energy Saxony and HZwo e.V., has numerous lighthouse projects for this purpose.
Energy Saxony supports the EMI players on the path to energy transformation as part of the Hydrogen Land Saxony innovation cluster funded by the Free State of Saxony.
Project overview
Aims of the project
The HZwo e.V. and Energy Saxony have established the INNOVATION CLUSTER HZW O in April 2018 to establish a supply infrastructure for green hydrogen and component development for fuel cell vehicles in Saxony, which is being funded by the Free State of Saxony with €1.6 million. The cluster combines the expertise of Saxon companies and research institutions in the fields of fuel cell technology, hydrogen and energy technology, vehicle drives, manufacturing and production technology as well as special machinery and plant engineering. The technologies, processes and project results developed in the network also contribute to strengthening key competencies in the fields of mobility, life science, mechanical engineering, microelectronics/ICT and environmental and energy technology and thus also to sustainably securing jobs in Saxony.
The main topics in the second cluster phase are:
- Construction of pilot lines and factories for electrolyzers and fuel cells
- Establishment of the Hydrogen Innovation Center HIC
- Coordination of project initiatives via HZwoFRAME Phase 2
- Supporting the hydrogen economy with infrastructure development and implementation
- Organization of seminars, workshops and conferences for networking and the transfer of technology and knowledge
- Technology demonstration through active public relations work
- Internationalization, esp. in the border triangle Saxony – Poland – Czech Republic: initiation and coordination of cross-border hydrogen energy and transport projects (IPCEI projects, Horizon Europe initiatives and network cooperation)
- Support for energy-intensive companies in the industrial arc in the district of Meißen that are part of the Energy and Hydrogen Alliance
Project duration
01.04.2018 until 31.03.2025

>> Press release on the project launch from 02.05.2023
* This measure is co-financed by tax funds on the basis of the budget approved by the members of the Saxon state parliament.
Promotion
The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection is funding the project over a period of five years with On July 5, 2022, Minister of Economic Affairs Martin Dulig presented the notification of follow-up funding for the second project phase until March 2025 as INNOVATIONSCLUSTER “WASSERSTOFFLAND SACHSEN” in the amount of € 1.21 million.

Component development for fuel cell vehicles
- The “Hydrogen Land Saxony” innovation cluster is supported by the HZwo e. V. association, which provides technical and operational support to the cluster members in the field of fuel cell vehicles.
- The HZwo e.V. initiates cross-thematic and interdisciplinary R&D cooperation projects on the subject of drive technologies for fuel cell vehicles with the aim of resource-conserving, ecologically and economically sustainable management from the selection of materials to the production process.
- The results generated from the projects contribute to the pooling of knowledge and expertise in the field of fuel cell technology and create the basis for the development of a new branch of industry in Saxony.
Supply infrastructure for green hydrogen
-
As a consortium partner, Energy Saxony supports the cluster members in the field of green hydrogen.
-
The aim is to identify, plan and implement a large number of economically attractive use cases, particularly in the areas of mobility (rail transport, bus and car fleet operators), agriculture, industry, airports and buildings.
-
Energy Saxony is also responsible for developing new user groups for green hydrogen, establishing a Saxon supply infrastructure and the targeted networking of industry players.
