Education Network Battery MD

Network for securing skilled workers in the battery value chain in Central Germany

The growing global demand for batteries for a wide range of applications in the energy sector, the automotive and electrical industries, mechanical engineering and medical technology, coupled with a shortage of resources and skilled workers and environmental sustainability requirements, poses major challenges for the battery industry.

In order to strengthen the battery production value chain – from raw material extraction to recycling – in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia with regard to the needs-based qualification of skilled workers, Energy Saxony has joined forces with nine other partners to launch the educational association BatterieMD – “Battery Ecosystem in Central Germany”.

Project overview

Together with the innovation clusters, vocational training providers and scientific institutions involved in the project, current and future qualification needs of companies along the central German battery cell production value chain are to be identified in order to develop, test, implement and disseminate a systematic, needs-based and sustainable qualification concept.

The first measures planned include analyzing the most important players along the battery value chain, from raw materials to cell and battery production and battery recycling, as well as putting together a qualified advisory board. This is to be made up of representatives from social organizations, regional employment agencies and expertise from politics and education.

Project duration

01.04.2023-31.03.2028

Promotion

The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection is funding the project over a period of five years with a total of €7,619,057.56 as part of the “Qualification measures for battery cell production” funding program. As project coordinator, Energy Saxony e.V. will receive a grant of € 1,037,190.00.
