As a result of the negotiations between GKN Automotive and the employee representatives, which are supported by IG Metall, an internal innovation process was initiated. In this context, concepts were developed that combine the existing know-how and expertise of the current workforce with potential business models suitable for the Zwickau-Moselle site, particularly in relation to the hydrogen megatrend.

Local and state politicians are already involved and offer support with funding solutions. In addition, further funds for the qualification and retraining of employees are part of the negotiations with the works council.

The approximately 45,000 m2 production site is located in the immediate vicinity of the Volkswagen plant in Zwickau and offers the possibility of dividing up the space for a technology center for medium-sized companies in the renewable energy segment.

Due to the density of technical universities and research institutions for hydrogen, Saxony offers access to industry experts and pioneers in this industry, making the Cluster of Excellence an ideal location for renewable energy companies.

Today, companies and investors considering expansion strategies are faced with significant challenges regarding the increasing shortage of qualified workers in the labor market. The acquisition provides direct access to a highly skilled workforce with extensive expertise and experience in cold metal forming, milling, friction and laser welding, hardening and assembly. The employees are experienced in setting up highly efficient processes from prototyping to series production.

The M&A consultancy Saxenhammer is coordinating the investment process.
