University of Leipzig

As a member of the German U15, Leipzig University is one of the large, research-intensive and leading medical universities in Germany. It is based on the guiding principle of the classical comprehensive university and actively promotes a culture of interdisciplinary cooperation and integration. As a traditional university (motto: “Crossing borders by tradition”), which has been paving the way for inventions and innovations since 1409, the Alma mater Lipsiensis has a historically grown, diverse and vital range of subjects, some of which offer unique courses.

Leipzig University has developed a profile as a research university with international recognition and appeal. Its scientific growth cores are bundled into three strategic research fields:

  • Changing orders in a globalized world
  • Intelligent methods and materials and
  • Sustainable foundations for life and health.

With its diverse offerings for citizens, institutions and companies, the university is also an intellectual, cultural and socio-economic center for the Central German region and beyond.

Energy research is one of the dynamic growth cores in Leipzig University’s research profile. In the profile areas “Sustainable Systems and Biodiversity” and “Complex Matter”, research is being carried out on a large number of current issues with international visibility and great success with third-party funding. From basic research to application, scientists are involved in these transdisciplinary alliances, which range from scientific and technical energy research to the biosciences and geosciences through to the humanities and economics.

One of the strengths of energy research in Leipzig lies in the close involvement of non-university partners: members of the research network include the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ), the Leibniz Institute for Surface Modification (IOM), the German Biomass Research Center (DBFZ) and the Fraunhofer Center for International Management and Knowledge Economy. Another focus is on the energy industry, for example in cooperation with Germany’s only energy exchange, the Leipzig-based European Energy Exchange. However, innovative approaches based on renewable energy sources and a modified raw material base, such as the use of environmentally friendly catalytic processes, are also being developed.
