German Aerospace Center (DLR)

THE DLR AT A GLANCE

DLR is the aerospace research center of the Federal Republic of Germany and conducts research and development in the fields of aviation, space, energy and transport, security and digitalization. It has its headquarters in Cologne and is represented at a further 30 locations in Germany and 4 offices abroad(overview of locations and offices).

ENERGY RESEARCH AT THE DLR

DLR energy research is making key contributions to the decarbonized energy system of the future as well as to the transition phase. The portfolio includes renewable energy sources, energy conversion technologies and energy storage as well as energy system analysis.

THE INSTITUTE FOR LOW CO2 INDUSTRIAL PROCESSES

DLR is expanding its expertise in energy research with the Institute for Low CO2 Industrial Processes in the Lusatia region. The aim is to reduce CO2 and pollutant emissions from industrial processes and power plants. The work focuses on the specific requirements and research needs for the decarbonization of large energy-intensive industrial sectors (power plants, steel production, cement industry, petrochemical industry, chemical industry, aluminium production). At the same time, the Institute’s research topics complement the activities on sustainable electricity generation and storage.

The institute thus strengthens DLR’s expertise in a socially and economically highly relevant field of energy research and makes a significant contribution to the major challenge of significantly reducingCO2 and pollutant emissions from industrial processes and power plants in the coming decade.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT TOPICS ARE:

  • High-temperature heat pumps as a large-scale option for combined heat and power generation, including the option of converting fossil-fired power plants into low-carbon energy suppliers – “Third Life of Coal Fired Power Plants”
  • Provision of renewable high-temperature heat for energy-intensive processes in key industries (example: chemical and cement industry)
  • Decarbonization of energy-intensive industrial processes (example: chemical industry) that are difficult or impossible to electrify.
