As an engineering company, DBI Gas- und Umwelttechnik GmbH in Leipzig provides support for gas supply companies, gas network operators, gas storage operators and users of natural gas and renewable gases. The subsidiary, DBI – Gastechnologisches Institut gGmbH Freiberg, is a research institute for fundamental issues.

The DBI Group focuses in particular on the production, processing and feed-in of biogenic gases, the development and introduction of smart grid technologies in the gas network and of power-to-gas technologies for the production, transportation and underground storage of methane and hydrogen, the increase in energy efficiency through innovative technologies in industrial and domestic gas technology, the development and introduction of combined heat and power systems, in particular fuel cells and much more.
