The technology start-up AMBARtec GmbH plans and develops solutions for its customers in the field of compact and long-term energy storage for transport, decentralized reconversion with combined heat and power generation and load management as well as for the mobility of tomorrow.

HYCS TECHNOLOGY: SIMPLE AND EFFECTIVE

With the innovative HyCS technology developed by AMBARtec, regeneratively generated energy based on hydrogen can be stored safely and for a long time, paving the way for sustainable system integration of renewable energies. Transportation over long distances is also possible.

At its core, HyCS technology consists of the reduction and oxidation of iron (Fe): During storage loading, the Fe is reduced by the added H2. Water vapor is released and can be used again in the electrolysis process. During discharge, water vapor is added at the point of use, which can also come from the exhaust gas of a reconversion unit. This oxidizes the Fe and H2 is made available.

HIGHEST STORAGE DENSITY

The HyCS process principle offers numerous advantages compared to conventional H2 storage. The graphic shows: More than 2 kWh of hydrogen can be stored in one liter of HyCS storage. This is about 2.5 to 5 times as much as in a pressurized container (700/350 bar). and twice as much as can be stored with liquid hydrogen, in metal hydrides or similar approaches (LOHC). This makes the HyCS storage system the most compact of all energy storage systems – and of course much more compact than Li-ion batteries (factor 10).

BEST EFFICIENCY

Intelligent integration, particularly with steam electrolysis (SOEC) and SOFC fuel cells, results in up to 100% higher efficiencies for long-term electricity storage than with alternative systems.

HyCS technology thus reduces H2 generation and storage costs.
